To Be Or Not To Be - Rose Gold Is The Question

It’s time to talk about rose gold. All the cool people have it, we all want it. But why does your hairstylist’s eyes roll in the back of their head when you pull out that one perfect “dusty mauve” or “champagne pink” picture from Instagram? I’m gonna be real, you guys. It’s one of the toughest colors our industry has come across and every stylist has tried to perfect it and give it a unique twist while trying to make our clients happy. There are cool toned rose golds, warm toned rose golds, some are super pink, and some are more “true gold”. I’m starting to sound like Dr. Suess, aren’t I? Don’t get me wrong, we want all of our clients to have their dream hair, and we all want to be crowned the Rose Gold Kings and Queens of our salons, but it takes a perfectly prepared canvas. When we explain to you that these fantasy colors may not happen in one appointment, that it may take 3, 4, even up to 6 visits to achieve - we are not saying we don’t want to do it. We aren’t saying it isn’t possible, either. But it takes commitment on both sides of the chair, and our commitment will always be to keep your hair healthy first.

As a stylist and a client myself, I decided to conduct a little experiment on my own hair so you guys can see what I’m talking about. I had a fellow stylist balayage my hair to what I would call a “natural light blonde” - no where near Gwen Stefani or Gaga - but light enough to be able to add the desired rose gold shade to my hair. This is what we got after the rose gold toner:

IMG_1930.JPG

YASSS, am I right? I was so in love. This is what we would consider a “cool toned” rose gold because there is a hint of violet throughout. Now, like a good client, I used the recommended shampoos from the Davines “Oi” Line and only washed my hair about every 3 days. We agreed on this shampoo / conditioner combo because I don’t mind to see my color fade gradually, where as other clients may choose to use a color enhancing / pigmented shampoo and conditioner line to keep the color from fading and extend their time between appointments. All of this can be discussed with your stylist, depending on your natural hair type and texture, as well as it’s condition after being colored.

I’m not kidding when I say this, it MATTERS what products you are using at home. Rose Gold and every other fantasy color is a heavy investment. If you are willing to pay for the service and touch up appointments, please do not use drug store shampoos on your unicorn hair. This is a service that, in the long run, can cost several hundred dollars. We are not trying to up your ticket price when we offer shampoo. We know how much you have already sacrificed financially for your dream hair, and we only want to help you continue to be satisfied with it once you leave. That being said, let’s check out my fade after 4 weeks of using salon recommended shampoo and conditioner:

Not too shabby! There has definitely been some fading, it’s much lighter but I have enjoyed the transition from a cooler rose gold to a more “champagne” color. To me, this is still a very wearable color and I would expect my next service to be another 4 weeks, which puts me at a full 8 weeks in between colors. Of course, this is completely customizable to you. Some of my clients prefer to make an appointment between balayage services for a quick re-tone. This means we do not touch up roots, but apply the same formula to “tone” that rose gold down again.

The most badass thing about you can absolutely be your hair. As stylists, we enjoy the creative challenge of what fantasy colors can be. Rose gold, silver, or lilac, all of the same rules apply. As long as it is an attainable goal where the health of your hair is not compromised and there is just as much commitment at home as we put in behind the chair, nothing is impossible. Be sure to bring lots of pictures and a very open mind to your next appointment. We can’t wait to see you!

Cha Cha's Meets Davines

Ever since Cha Cha’s opened in 2008, we have prided ourselves in having an open and honest communication with you, our clients. This includes continuing education for ourselves so we can be better stylists to all of you. We know it’s scary when you walk in and one of your favorite products isn't on the shelf anymore. But trust me, we would never ask you to try a new product line with us if we didn't think it would benefit you completely. We still have TONS of your favorite tried and true lines like Kevin Murphy, but we recently dipped our toes in the Davines pool and we really, really think you will like it too.

To make it simple, we started with a few smaller lines within the brand to avoid the overwhelming desire of sniffing every single product (trust me, this stuff smells good). I'm here to give you a quick overlook of each one to help you better decide which might be a good fit for you so you are prepared for your next visit.

“MORE INSIDE”

This line is super cool. It's formulated with no added coloring, no parabens, and no sulfates. All of it's packaging is recyclable and made from recycled products, even down to the ink on the paper (whaaaat?). Davines has also committed this line (and others) to participate in the “Zero Impact Carbon Neutral Project” which, long story short, is a really cool way of measuring their carbon output each year and replacing each tree and plant that they use for their ingredients. Literally giving back what they take from the environment. Round of applause for Davines.

The “More Inside” line includes four different formulas, “extra moisturizing”, “extreme bounce”, “texture”, and “anti-flaking”. They all vary in strength, and all promote shine, workable wear, and the general happiness of your hair.

“ALCHEMIC”

Raise your hand if you color your hair. Oh. All of you? Hello, meet your new favorite line formulated for you. Carefully crafted shampoos and conditioners that cater to brunettes, red heads, AND blondes. This ain’t your granny’s blue rinse though. All shampoos are formulated without silicones, parabens, and sulfates and contain tons of vitamin B to support healthy hair. The packaging for the Alchemic shampoos is made of 97% biodegradable ingredients. Your conditioners, which have super cool names like “tobacco” and “chocolate”, are all made from naturally derived ingredients including pure pigments.

“OI"

Y’all, I'm not kidding when I say this has quickly become one of our favorite lines in the salon. The Oi line is for ALL hair types and does a really great job of promoting softness, shine, frizz control, and decreased drying time. All of the products in this particular line have one thing in common - roucou oil as the main ingredient. A miracle from the Amazon, roucou oil is packed with beta carotene and serves as a natural heat (not thermal) protectant for your locks.

The Oi line contains a shampoo made with the magical roucou and rose oils and a conditioner formulated with apricot butter, which smells and feels incredible. We have also been blessed with a styling oil, a body wash, and the product thats got us all arm wrestling each other for the last drop - the almighty “all in one milk”. The Oi “Milk” is pretty much an all purpose styling product that conditions and fights frizz and also promotes volume and memory to your style. Let us try it in your next blow dry.

As always, we are not car salesmen and will never try to cram a million products into your purse each time you visit the shop. However, we work very hard to be able to provide you with the absolute best products in the salon that we confidently believe you can take home and recreate and maintain your favorite styles by yourself. We stand by each and every product we put in your hair, and thats a fact. We can't wait to see you guys for your next appointment so we can share (and smell) all of our fun new products with you!

KNOW YOUR SERVICE

It has happened to everyone. You find inspiration in a post online, or a stranger’s hair you pass on the street. You've made your decision, its time for a change. After you've collected an arsenal of Pinterest and Instagram photos of Jennifer Lawrence or some basketball player’s perfectly coiffed model wife, you decide to settle in and finally book your next hair appointment. You pull up a menu of services to choose from online, and the options become overwhelming. “Whats the difference between a single process and, oh my God, how do I even pronounce that? Bay…lee.. what is this? Does it go on my head?”

Let me break it down for you. The world of hair is always changing. As creative professionals, we like to coin phrases like “babylights” and “sombre” and “flamboyage” to reinvent the wheel a little bit and allow ourselves to put a fresh perspective on certain looks. At the end of the day, you have to ask yourself if you want your hair lighter, darker, or if you simply want a tonal change. So lets go over a few of the salon’s most popular services to help you decide what may be the right one for you.

SINGLE PROCESS COLOR

This one explains itself. One process, one application, one perfect dimensional color. This is typically what you would ask for if you have any grey or regrowth that needs to be covered, and if you are generally happy with your ends but may require a refresher for some shine and tonal adjustment. Single process colors are typically touched up every 4 to 6 weeks.

FOIL / TRADITIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

Foil highlights are for the old school blondes. For the “why fix it if it ain’t broke?” clients. Using a foil generates a little extra heat for a little extra lift. If you like a consistent highlight from root to end and don't mind a touch up every 6 weeks, this is the service for you. Using a more specific placement, whether its just a few micro pieces around your face, or a head full of so many foils you might be worried you can contact aliens on other planets. E.T.  - phone your salon.

BALAYAGE / HAIRPAINTING

The big B word. Pronounced “BAH-LEE-AHGE”, the word means “to sweep or paint” in French. You will see a TON of it in the salon right now. Throughout 2017, the theme in hair has stayed the same - natural. Natural colors and textures are here to stay. Balayage is a perfect technique to enhance your natural color while allowing for a softer, longer grow out. Painted right on the hair, without a foil, it creates a seamless blend from start to finish. This service is more customizable to you, and between you and your stylist, you can decide on a subtle balayage with just a few lighter pieces here and there, or a more dramatic, all over lighter feel. Balayage and hair painting typically does not go anywhere near the scalp, and allows for a more natural, back from the beach color. Since this is a more meticulous service where each highlight is specifically placed, it does take a little longer, typically between 2.5 and 3 hours, and the price may be a little higher. However, price and time is offset when your grow out is much softer, and your touch ups can last up to 8 weeks in between visits.

FASHION COLORS

I am going to be very honest with you here. The picture you have saved to your phone of an Instagram model with an array of hues melted in a perfectly harmonious rainbow is either a wig, photoshopped, or took SEVERAL appointments to achieve. Let me tell you why. You know the saying “Rome was not built in a day”? - neither was that perfect purple melt. Sure, the stylist posted a thirty second video of the application and ta-dah! But what you aren't shown is the (possible) months of preparation it took to be able to create that perfect unicorn mane. There are several things a stylist must consider before performing a vibrant fashion color service. Your natural and preexisting color (meaning previous salon or home color that still lives in those ends), the integrity of your hair, and your commitment to maintaining a fashion color are all huge factors and will need to be discussed during your consultation. Fashion colors are a truly personal service and touch ups can range between 4 to 6 weeks or longer, depending on at home maintenance and if you are a fan of a "rooty" grown out look. I strongly suggest calling the salon to book a consultation before jumping into the service so you and your stylist can create a game plan together on how many appointments it may take you to attain your multicolored goals.

Of course, each and every service you will receive at the salon will be completely unique to you. There is a common misconception that hairstylists don't like pictures. We appreciate and welcome pictures of hair, because even if it isn't an attainable goal in one appointment, it still serves as inspiration for future visits. Now that you know a little more about what service might be the one for you, what are you waiting for? It's time to make that change!
